A big family was even more extraordinary in the 1800s

Experts say that in the 1800s as many as one third of children failed to reach the age of five. That makes it even more amazing that Elizabeth and Frederick Garraux had ELEVEN children, all of whom lived to adulthood. Several of them lived out their lives in Greenville, three of them in the family homestead on Garraux Street! Their stories are in the historical fiction novel “When He Was Gone,” currently awaiting publication.

(Fun note: The elbow you see in the window is Elizabeth’s. She is the main subject of my book.)
